Cake Ordering & Care Guide: Sizing, Lead Times & Transport in Hobart

Planning a celebration should be exciting, not stressful. Whether you’re organizing a first birthday, an intimate anniversary dinner, or a full-scale wedding reception in Hobart, choosing the right cake size, understanding ordering timelines, and knowing how to get your cake safely to the party makes all the difference.

Every cake, cupcake, and treat baked at Nectar Eater is 100% dairy and egg free. We make plant-based celebrations seamless and delicious without compromising on rich textures, moist crumb, or show-stopping decoration.

1. Ordering Lead Times & Booking Deadlines

Because every cake is baked from scratch and individually styled by hand, our weekly baking schedule fills up quickly.

  • Celebration Cakes & Cupcakes: Minimum 7-day lead time required. Orders close once our weekly schedule reaches capacity.
  • Custom Wedding Cakes: Minimum 4 to 8 weeks advance notice is strongly recommended to guarantee your date and allow for design consultations.
  • Postal Treats & Brownies: Baked fresh and posted every Tuesday. This dispatch schedule ensures your treats travel swiftly through the post and avoids them sitting in transit or shipping depots over the weekend.

Need a cake sooner? Reach out via our contact page and we will let you know if we have short-notice availability in the kitchen.

2. Cake Sizing & Portion Guide

How much cake do you need? That depends on whether you are serving dessert-sized portions (after a light meal) or party coffee-sized slices (often cut as finger portions after a substantial meal or at cocktail receptions).

Cake Style & Size Layers Servings (Dessert) Servings (Coffee / Party) Best For
6" Round Cake 3 Layers 10–12 15–18 Intimate family dinners, children's parties
6" Round Cake 4 Layers 18–20 22–25 Milestone birthday dinners, small gatherings
7" Round Cake 3 Layers 15–18 20–22 Mid-sized celebrations, office milestones
7" Round Cake 4 Layers 25–30 30–35 Large family birthdays, engagement parties
8" Round Cake 3 to 4 Layers 25–35 40–45 Big celebrations, joint birthdays, wedding tiers
8" Vintage Heart Cake 2 to 4 Layers 12–25 20–40 Anniversaries, romantic birthdays, bachelorette parties
Cupcake Box (6 or 12) Single serve 6 or 12 6 or 12 Park picnics, school celebrations, effortless dessert tables

Pro Tip for Slicing Tall Cakes: Rather than cutting traditional thin pie wedges (which tend to topple on tall multi-layer cakes), cut a horizontal slice across the cake, transfer it to a cutting board, and cut into neat vertical fingers. You’ll get clean slices and more servings!

3. How to Safely Transport Your Cake in Hobart

Our celebration cakes are built on sturdy cake boards and packaged in secure bakery boxes, but Tasmanian roads and steep Hobart hills require careful handling:

  1. Keep the box flat on the car floor: The single safest place in your vehicle is the front passenger floorboard or the flat boot floor. Never put a cake on a tilted car seat or balance it on someone’s lap. Use a non-slip rubber mat or towel underneath the box to prevent sliding.
  2. Crank the air conditioning: Vegan buttercream is made from plant-based fats that stay beautifully structured when cold. In warmer weather or sunny afternoons, pre-cool your vehicle before placing the cake inside. Avoid direct sunlight hitting the box.
  3. Drive smoothly: Take corners slowly, avoid sudden braking, and leave extra following distance. Hobart's hills and roundabouts need gentle navigation with a tiered beauty on board.
  4. Carry with both hands from the bottom: Always support the base of the bakery box with two flat hands. Never carry the box by its sides or top flaps, as inward pressure can touch delicate piped borders.

4. Storing & Serving Your Cake

  • Before the Party: Store your cake in the refrigerator in its box. Keep it away from strong-smelling foods like onions or garlic.
  • Serving Temperature: For the best flavor and melt-in-the-mouth buttercream texture, take the cake out of the fridge 1 to 2 hours before cutting (on warm summer days, 30–45 minutes is plenty). Buttercream is meant to be eaten at room temperature.
  • Leftovers: Wrap sliced cake tightly or place leftovers in an airtight container. Leftovers stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days, or can be sliced, wrapped, and frozen for up to 3 months.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When are postal treats dispatched?

To ensure peak freshness, all postal treats (including our fudgy brownie slabs and chunky cookies) are baked and dispatched every Tuesday. Posting on Tuesdays ensures your box arrives promptly and avoids delicate treats being held in shipping depots over the weekend.

Are all of your cakes really 100% dairy and egg free?

Yes, absolutely! Everything we bake at Nectar Eater is completely free from dairy, eggs, and animal-derived products. We use fair-trade cocoa, organic plant-based ingredients, and premium plant fats. Most guests are amazed to learn our cakes are 100% vegan.

Can you accommodate gluten-free or nut allergies?

We offer gluten-free friendly options on our cupcakes, select cake flavours, and our organic buckwheat cookie mixes. However, please note that all our bakes are prepared in a commercial kitchen that processes wheat/gluten, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. While we take every cleaning and cross-contamination precaution, trace amounts may be present.

Where and when can I pick up my cake?

Collection is from our kitchen in West Hobart, Tasmania by pre-arranged appointment. Please note that because we attend the Farm Gate Market on Sunday mornings, we do not schedule local collections on Saturday evenings or Sundays.

Do you deliver within Hobart?

Yes! We offer local delivery across Hobart and surrounding suburbs. For wedding cakes and large multi-tiered celebrations, venue delivery and on-site setup are included in your custom booking.

Can I customize the cake colors, piping, and text?

Yes. Our Vintage Heart Cakes, Floral Drip Cakes, and Character Cakes allow you to choose your base and piping colors, add personalized piped text or cherries, and select from our signature flavor combinations.

How do I book a custom wedding cake?

Simply visit our Weddings & Events collection and submit an inquiry with your event date, estimated guest count, and styling preferences. Kit will be in touch to discuss design options and flavor profiles.
